Comite River 03 - photos by Andrew using cheap Aiptek VGA Pencam- poor resolution on low resolution setting

The Comite River is graced by sandy areas followed abruptly by gravel bottom and clay bottom areas.  "Habitats" are often abrupt.  It can change suddenly around each turn.  Tall sand and clay banks are cut into the terrain.  Nice sandy or gravel (sandstone pebbles about an 1-2 inches diam) beaches are common.  Sandy beaches make the best camp sites because they are softer.  You just have to deal with sand in the socks and tents.  I have found that wearing Neoprene socks under 'boot' waders are the best combination.

Pictures taken with a very cheap Aiptek VGA Pencam by Andrew.  Poor resolution but you get the general idea.

John finds a rope coincidentally tied off from a tree near where he plans to ascend.

Yes, the rope holds.

There are often very large trees laying in the water.  Eroded banks and exposed roots are common along the river. Look carefully and you can see John through the branches.

Huge volumes of water violently erode the banks during heavy rains.

Some people just push their garbage into the river but along this route pollution is rare.

The sand in the river makes a great filter giving a very clear water in some spots.  You can see several feet down.

Never forget your hat !!!
