Software recommendationsEssential Recommendations:1) I personally use Zone Alarm Security Suite. Consists of a firewall to help prevent hacking, ID theft and other snooping. Consists also of virus protection, and programmable Censorship or filtering of web material. They also have a FREE consumer use firewall (without the other bells and whistles) that works very good and I highly recommend. 2) Ad-aware - removes spyware from your computer that is installed WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION by various websites. These spyware may slow your computer down to the point of being non-functional. I recommend the use of Ad-aware on a weekly basis. 3) Test your system security online at Trendmicro (recommended) or http://www.newbiehangout.com/virus_test.htm Symantec Security Check - makers of Norton Home PC Firewall Guide -test your computers defenses Firewall Testing Firewall Test, Port Scan and Internet Security made easy - Spy Ware, Audit and Tools Cajun Clickers Computer Club -great general resource I recommend Firefox as an alternative web browser software, it is free and very very functional. Better than Internet explorer. Web Editing and resources for personal or business websites:1) For making and editing webpages I recommend FrontPage 2003 (or the free version - Frontpage Express). 2) If you want to display a catalogue of images of products you will sell then I recommend the FREE thumbnail program called Easy Thumbs from Fookes Software. You can reduce the size (data/file size and image size) of pictures with a quick 'batch' editing technique. I recommend the use of Tripod for a free hosting service. Homestead and Geocities also have free hosting. Free hosting sites use banner advertising to 'target' advertise to you and your visitors. I find that these host sites do not engage in 'objectionable advertising'. Tripod hosting is compatible with Frontpage because they have the Frontpage extensions available. You will have to activate the extensions from within your tripod managing tools that are online. I don't know if homestead or geocities offer the compatibility with Frontpage. Using Tripod.com Establish a username and password. The Username will be the name of your website ( http://username.tripod.com). You must login to your account and make sure you have 'Frontpage extensions' installed or enabled for your site to use Frontpage software. In Frontpage make a page named "index.htm". This will be the default initial page loaded (as default by all browsers) when a visiter goes to your site. After editing pages, in Frontpage, click on "file", then Publish Web. Specify the location as http://frontpage.tripod.com/username/ Make sure to use the ending slash mark. Type in your username, then your password. Frontpage will automatically make updates to your website.
